Written by GSE1 Faust depicting a invention by our 1st CO HV Maxiner. Captain Maxiner's specialty was underwater acoustics, during our 1st ASW work ups we went to the Autec range off Andros Island Bahamas. The exercise was to play at war with a sub and try and defeat it, some of the rules of engagement were for "Safety Reasons" were that were not allowed to use Prarie/Masker, nor were we allowed to stream Nixie, but this was supposed to be a even fight.

Mad Max, as we used to call him, hated having his hands tied when it came to a fight, so he cooked up a plan to have some "safe" noise makers to decoy the subs torps. Down in the HT shop Mad Max and the HT's got some empty 5 gal AFFF cans punched some holes in'em, tied a piece of line to the AFFF can handle, and on the other end, tied a emergency cutting outfit O2 bottle to the other, and at the right time passed them over the side and they worked like a champ.

The folks at the range or on the sub were never the wiser how we bested the sub that day. The cartoon was "Pappy Fausts" satirical view of how such a device would be installed if run through official Navy channels.
